Summary

Setting up GV is a two-step process. You have to correctly configure both GV as well as Google Voice.

Configuration

Configuring Google Voice

Configure your Google Voice account as follows:

1. Log in at Google Voice
2. Go to your Phone settings page
3. Select your cell phone, press "Edit"
4. Make sure that Phone Type is set to "Mobile"
5. Make sure that SMS Settings is "[X] Receive SMS on this phone (mobile phones only)"

If you want to be able to place calls faster, you need to tell Google Voice to not require your PIN when calling from your cell phone:

1. Click "Show advanced settings"
   1. Make sure that under Voicemail Access you have "(*) Yes (default for mobile phones)"
   2. Make sure that under Voicemail Access you also have "(*) PIN not required (for added convenience)"
2. Press Save

Configuring GV

To configure GV, do the following:

1. Start GV
2. Press the "Menu" button on your phone
3. Select "Settings"
4. Enter your Google account information (the one you used when you signed up with Google Voice)
5. Enter your Google Voice number
6. Enter your cell phone number
7. Enter your PIN
8. Select "Always use Google Voice" if that is what you want. Otherwise, leave it unselected.
9. Set the "PIN Required" setting
   1. If you turned off the PIN above, then make sure that "PIN Required" is disabled.
   2. If not, then enable "PIN Required".
   3. If you ever change it through the web, make sure to do it in the application as well!

GV Settings

Username

This is the username of the Google account that you used when you created your Google Voice account. You do not need to include the '@gmail.com'.

Password

This is the password of the Google account that you used when you created your Google Voice account.

Google Voice Number

Enter the phone number that was assigned to you when you signed up for Google Voice.

Google Voice PIN

The PIN code that you selected in order to access your Google Voice account from your mobile phone.

Callback number

This needs to be the number which Google will use to initiate your call. This will almost always be your cell phone number. Only change this if you know what you're doing!

Voicemail Interval

If you want your phone to automatically check for new voicemails, set how often you want it to check using this option. If you want to disable this feature, simply select "Never".

Always use GV

If this is enabled, virtually every call that comes from your phone will go through Google Voice, whether it started within the GV application or not.

Use callback dialing

If this is enabled, calls will be initiated by having Google call you, then the other person, and then connect you two. If this is disabled, calls will be initiated by calling your Google Voice number, entering your PIN (if applicable), pressing "2", entering the number to call, and then pressing "#" to finally start the call.

Require PIN

This needs to match the setting on your Google Voice account. (See the top of this page for more information)
