Entering fill-ups

When entering fill-ups (or editing existing ones), there are a couple of tips you might find useful:

  • If you prefer to enter tripometer data, simply prefix your odometer reading with a '+'. For example, if you have drive 235 miles since your last fill-up, enter '+235' into your odometer field. This will automatically add the value to your previous fill-ups reading.
  • If you're traveling in a foreign country and buying fuel in a different volume unit than you normally buy (pretend I live in the US, where gasoline is sold by the US Gallon, and I visit Canada, where gasoline is sold by the litre), simply enter the volume which you purchased (45 liters, for example), then long-press on the volume field. You can then convert the units inline without having to do the mental math.
  • If you are entering historical data from receipts and just have the total cost of the fill-up (not the price-per-unit cost), then simply fill out the form in reverse: enter the amount of fuel purchased and the total amount spent. Then, long-press on the price field and select "Convert to unit cost." This will divide the cost by the volume and give you the price per unit of fuel.
  • The odometer field also has a hidden short-cut: long-press on that to convert between distance units seamlessly.

Importing from CSV

Performing extra analysis

If the default data analysis isn't sophisticated enough for you, feel free to import the data into Excel (or your spreadsheet editor of choice) and analyze to your heart's content! Simply export your data as a CSV file, copy it from your phone to your computer, and the import that into Excel. Once in there, you can manipulate it just like any other spreadsheet.

Backing up your data

If you are a person who likes to keep backups of your data, just in case, then I applaud you. I highly encourage everyone to do this regularly (and may write it into my app at a future time). Simple press Menu, select Import/Export, and then export your data as a SQLite Database. This will place a mileage.db file on your SD card (which can be imported later). If you have an application such as OI File Manager installed, you can email it to yourself right from your phone. Otherwise, you can connect your phone to your computer using any USB mini-B cable and transfer it to your computer for safe keeping.
